Literacy for Life, formerly known as the Rita Welsh Adult Literacy Program, builds better lives by teaching adults the literacy skills required for self-sufficiency, better health, and meaningful participation in society. Literacy for Life provides one-to-one tutoring in basic reading, math, GED preparation, and English as a Second language to adults in the Greater Williamsburg area.

Literacy for Life is always looking for kind, patient people to tutor one-to-one in reading, writing, math, and ESOL for adult learners. Volunteers are needed to tutor basic reading, math, GED preparation, and English as a Second language a minimum of two hours per week. Orientation and training are provided. Additional volunteers are needed for general office duties including answering phones, filing, typing, etc. No formal teaching experience is required. Literacy for Life provides tutor training workshops, a library of print and nonprint teaching materials, a computer-assisted learning lab for independent study, and daily, informal support. There is no need to speak another language either, because the instruction to foreign-born learners is based on total immersion in English. Visit the website to apply, click on the "volunteer" tab and complete the short form.
