AVALON: A Center for Women and Children

Website: {{http://www.avaloncenter.org/}}

Avalon is the regional state-recognized, -funded, and -accredited agency on domestic violence and sexual assault, including rape and human trafficking. In 2016 we served some 600 people in Williamsburg, James City County, York County, Poquoson, New Kent, West Point, and Charles City.

The professional staff of Avalon Center includes six credentialed counselors, including a dedicated children's counselor and a high-risk counselor specifically for rape and human trafficking survivors.   Avalon's team of hospital accompaniment volunteers advocate for sexual assault survivors seeking medical attention and support at local hospitals.

The Avalon Center campus shelters up to 50 individuals-- without a time limit on their stay-- and provides professional counseling and life skills training onsite.  Avalon Youth Services opened in January 2017 at 312 Waller Mill Road Williamsburg, VA and serves youth and families in the entire 9th Judicial District of VA.

Volunteers are needed to answer our 24-hour help line, help with community outreach and education, serve as a shelter advocate, assist with office duties, provide occasional transportation, assist with child care, act as companions and resource persons to women in the shelter, and help with fundraising efforts.
