Position Overview

Branch Out Coordinators provide leadership for the entire alternative break program, working closely to fulfill the Branch Out mission, vision, and values. Six coordinators work together on a team, with two focusing on each of three areas. In addition to the responsibilities below, each coordinator will serve as a peer advisor for 2-3 site leader pairs. 

Education Coordinators
Education Coordinators work closely with Site Leaders to ensure they are supported and prepared to implement high-quality alternative breaks and develop active citizenship. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Recruit and select Site Leaders
  • Plan and lead Site Leader class in cooperation with OCE staff.
  • Plan and lead reorientation events after fall, winter, and spring breaks
  • Create a sense of inclusion and fun among Site Leaders through group-building and bonding events
  • Plan and implement program-wide fundraising

Site Coordinators
Site Coordinators work closely with community partners, housing hosts, and transportation managers to develop sustainable, mutually-beneficial partnerships. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develop partnerships for all trips, confirming community partners, housing sites, and transportation
  • Evaluate partnership opportunities to ensure alignment with Branch Out values and positive community impact
  • Plan and lead the Site Leader training retreat

Development Coordinators
Development Coordinators promote a quality experience for participants, creating an inclusive, fun community and ensuring alternative breaks are accessible to all.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Recruit participants for all alternative breaks
  • Welcome participants to their teams in a spirit of celebration and lightheartedness
  • Oversee publicity and branding for Branch Out through social media, interest meetings, and other creative methods
  • Plan and implement events including the year-end celebration
  • Plan and implement an alumni engagement strategy, including regular communication, community and student impact reporting, and a homecoming gathering

Coordinators work an average of five hours per week, with some weeks requiring more time (up to ten hours per week on occasion). Coordinators meet weekly in a full group, as well as with their co-Coordinator.

Coordinators are hired in the spring to attend three transition meetings with current Student Directors in April, and work through the following academic year. Each Coordinator is required to attend the Break Away Alternative Break Citizenship School over the summer, at no cost. Applicants who are currently studying abroad are welcome to apply; interviews will take place via Skype or Google Hangout.

  • Significant leadership and community engagement experience; experience as a Site Leader is not required
  • Understanding of and commitment to the value of education, orientation, training and reorientation in alternative breaks
  • Experience with public speaking, training and peer education
  • Understanding of and ability to manage productive group dynamics
  • Ability to serve as ambassadors for the Branch Out Alternative Breaks program, contributing ideas for improvement and publicizing our goals with the campus and beyond
  • Professionalism, attention to detail, and follow-through
  • Availability for a weekly meeting with fellow Coordinators and other required events

Coordinators cannot also serve as site leaders.
