Duenya Hassan received a bachelor’s degree from the College of William & Mary, double majoring in Government and Gender, Sexuality, & Women’s Studies. Her honors thesis “Lurking Online: Countering Extremist Narratives in Unfamiliar Territory” won the Warner Moss Prize Award for outstanding thesis in the William & Mary Government Department. Her thesis was the first of its kind to test the effectiveness of counter-narratives to challenge the appeal of ISIS through a survey experiment. Her main areas of interest are the Middle East and North Africa and countering extremist narratives.
