X-Win & SSH Expiration
Using Xming and Putty Instead of X-Win and SSH
X-Win and SSH are not freeware, and they will eventually expire. Faculty, staff, and students are free to use them in the meantime, but it is a good idea to transition to Xming and Putty, also both included on PAC lab and podium computers.
Fortunately, using Xming and Putty is very easy.
Xming and Putty are both located in the Start Menu (you can either find them in the Start Menu or use the search item to type in their partial names).
First, run Xming itself. Since Xming is meant to run in the background, launching it from the Start Menu won't appear to do anything (even though Xming is running). If you want to verify Xming is running, look at the lower-right corner of your computer screen. You may need to click on the caret symbol ("^") there to see a list of things running in the background. Xming will appear as a black X with a red circle around it:
Now that Xming is running, go back to that same location in the Start Menu and launch Putty. The Putty configuration window will open:
If you are running xmaple or xstata, the default settings in the configuration window should suit you (this includes connection to the server "stat.wm.edu").
Click "Open" to open a connection. Click "Yes" if a security alert appears:
A console will appear and ask for your username and password. Once you enter those, you will see a normal console prompt. At this prompt, you can type, for example, xstata or xmaple like you used to, in order to open one of those programs:
