Technology Tips for Students - Fall 2022


W&M Information Technology has compiled classroom resources, Blackboard tips, technology updates and other information to help get your semester started on the right foot.

Welcome to the start of the Fall 2022 semester! In order to ensure that your semester gets off to a smooth start, we have some important resources and guides to help you get started. 

Email helpful tips ahead

As a reminder, your email address is your primary email address for the university. All students should now be using Microsoft Outlook. Access to Gmail (as well as the email forward in place from O365 to Gmail) will expire on December 31, 2022. 

Blackboard Tips
  1. Don’t see your course on Blackboard?  
    • Make sure your instructor is using Blackboard to post course content. 
    • Check your Banner enrollment to make sure you are registered. 
    • The course may be unavailable while the instructor updates the course content. Check with your instructor. 
  2. I am not getting Notifications or Announcement (Using Blackboard Ultra Navigation Students link here) updates for my Blackboard course. 
    • Make sure you have updated how you receive notifications. 
    • Announcements and Emails from Blackboard will appear with the do not reply@blackboard.wm. Check your email junk folder to make sure you are getting messages.

  4. Taking Exams in Blackboard? Here are some test taking tips.
  5. Do you know about Blackboard Ally? Ally allows you to download alternate formats for files posted in Blackboard that include readable text for screen readers, audio, tagged pdf and BeeLine Reader. Get started with Blackboard Ally.  
  6. How to check to see if your assignment was submitted. 
  7. Check your browser to see if it supports the most recent version of Blackboard.
Technology Resources & Updates
Microsoft Teams

Students now have access to Microsoft Teams for messaging and other collaborative functions. This is a good way to connect with your professors for one-on-one and group discussions. Learn more about Microsoft Teams


As you may have noticed, Banner Self-Service received a fresh, new design over the summer. The new look will be the first of many updates for Banner, and students, faculty and staff can expect to see the changes roll out in phases.


Students are given a licensed account to Zoom and will need to log in at to activate and download the desktop application. 


If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact our Technology Support Center. Our hours during the semester are Monday - Friday 8am – 5pm with extended coverage while classes are in session from 5pm – 7pm Monday - Thursday.
