Fire Extinguisher Training

William & Mary offers fire extinguisher training to clubs and organizations where an outdoor “live fire” simulator brings the feel of real life extinguishment without the panic in an uncontrolled environment. Hands-on training teaches muscle memory that gives the ability to respond and make decisions quickly during a real emergency evacuation.

An example would be our chemistry students and laboratory workers. These hazard areas get a light lecture of the do’s and don’ts of isolation before evacuation before going outside and using another type of simulator where when props are installed prompts the emphasis on a trash can or an electric motor from a stove. This is an added benefit for the Resident Advisors (RA’s) who deal with unattended cooking fire alarms often. The computer detects the aiming and sweeping motion, the system automatically varies the flame in response, providing a realistic training experience.

One of our newest training aids involves an indoor simulation system that projects a fire on a screen utilizing laser fire extinguishers for those university office occupants who don’t have the luxury of leaving the building for a training session.  In conjunction with our indoor system we combine the procedural steps of evacuation should the need occur to use a fire extinguisher upon egress. The additional station includes a pull station, strobe light, smoke detector, annunciator, and an interactive 9-1-1 phone that allow you to practice responding to an emergency from the moment you notice a fire.
