Student Emergency Notification Request

Students may find themselves missing classes due to unforeseen circumstances. The Student Emergency Notification Request process is designed to serve as a resource and central point of contact for students who need to notify professors of their emergency situation. 

COVID-19 Update

Students who have been diagnosed with COVID-19, please visit to initiate case management that will help you navigate living, study and work while protecting your privacy. You will receive instructions from a W&M physician or nurse. A case manager will also serve as a point of contact throughout the isolation period. Non- Emergency Student Notification Request Policy

(Minor illness, regular doctor's visit, dentist appointments, prearranged trips, interviews, conferences, court dates, or participation in athletic events)

Students are responsible for contacting each of their faculty members regarding missing class for all non- emergency related situations. The Dean of Students Office will only notify faculty regarding student's missed classes due to hospitalization, death in the family, or other uncontrollable emergencies.

This notification serves as a courtesy notice and not a verification of their time away. Each student is bound by the William & Mary Honor Code. All students are advised to contact faculty regarding missed classes, assignments, exams, and their faculty course expectations.

Emergency Student Notification Request Policy

(Time away caused by student's serious illness medical or mental health, hospitalization, or death or serious illness of close family member, which threaten the student's academic progress)

When a student misses class for legitimate reasons/ emergency situations students may contact the Dean of Students Office by completing the Student Emergency Notification Request Form along with submitting the supporting documentation to request notification be sent to their faculty members. If the student is physically or emotionally unable to contact the office, a family member or health care provider, with the student's permission may submit the notification request on the student's behalf. 

Once the information has been obtained and verified regarding a student's emergency, the Dean of Students Office will notify the student's faculty members as requested. Notification of the missed class(es) will be by e-mail. Notification of the missed class(es) by the Dean of Students Office does not excuse students from classes and/ or course requirements; the faculty member's policies prevail. Students are also responsible for following up with their individual faculty members as soon as they are able to discuss possible arrangements for completing academic course requirements and assignments missed during their time away.
