On Thursday, March 21, 2013, the W&M in Washington Program hosted The Kardia Quartet for a private concert and reception. Professor Greg Bowers introduced the musicians and explained his inspiration for their music -- his orginal compositions.
Current program students mingled with alumni and guests over hors d'oeuvres and then proceeded to the concert venue, where all were entertained by the Kardia Quartet, featuring:
- String Quartet No. 1: The Star-Crossed - composed by G. Bowers (EAST COAST premiere)
- String Quartet No. 2: By-Products of Mass Media - composed by G. Bowers (winning piece of VMTA Composer Competition)
- String Quartet No. 3 - composed by T. Mauthe
The Kardia Quartet is quickly garnering recognition and acclaim for its refreshing and expressive approach to the quartet repertoire. Formed in 2011 after meeting as Fellows at the Perlman Music Program Chamber Music Workshop, the Kardia Quartet enjoys a dynamic and diverse career. Members of the Kardia Quartet have collaborated in chamber music performances with Itzhak Perlman, Ani and Ida Kavafian, Peter Oundjian, and members of the Tokyo, Cleveland, Cavani, Takacs, and Juilliard Quartets, as well as the Weilerstein Trio. After performing in DC, the quartet spent a week in March with The College of William and Mary Department of Music and the Williamsburg Youth Orchestra.
