Mandatory Reporting of Threats and Acts of Violence
Obligation for students, faculty, and staff to report
State Law and University Policy Requiring Reporting of Threats
To help William & Mary satisfy its obligation under the Virginia law on threat assessment and to maintain a safe and secure campus community, all students and employees – including faculty – are required to report acts of violence, threats and threatening behavior, under the university's Violence and Threat Management Policy.
This Policy does not require victims to report.
This Policy does not replace other, more specific reporting obligations:
- Sexual violence must be reported in a particular way: promptly to the Title IX Coordinator. Sexual violence reported to the Title IX Coordinator does not need to be separately reported under the Campus Violence and Threat Management Policy.
- If the person with information about an acts of violence or threat is also a Campus Security Authority, he or she must consider whether the incident is a Clery Act crime that must be reported to William & Mary Police under the Crime Reporting Policy. When in doubt, the W&M Police staff can advise.
The Policy lists university officers to whom reports can be made. Additional information about identifying and responding to threats and concerning behavior is available on the university’s violence prevention and education website.
