Online Profiles

Social media is a powerful tool for connecting with professional, alumni, recruiters and their organizations. Each site offers its own variety of networking, which you can use to your advantage as you search for jobs or internships. Remember, your public information and profiles are also part of your job/internship search, make sure they represent you well!

  • Visit LinkedIn and start building your profile, if you haven't yet. Step one is getting started!
  • Round out your profile by including all the information on your resume, and all relevant skills and accomplishments.
  • Post a professional image with a headshot photo that is career-appropriate. The Career Center offers a LinkedIn photo booth during career fairs.
  • Add a headline to tell people what you're excited about now, and what you want to do in the future.
  • Follow organizations that have captured your interest, and stay up-to-date on their news, announcements, and opportunities.
  • Join groups relevant to your chosen field, and follow their discussions to learn about current trends.
  • Update your profile with posts relevant to your field/work, so employers can see that you take your career seriously.
  • Make use of features like the Job Search and Alumni Search tools. These are made specifically to help you find opportunities.
  • Search for alumni who work for organizations you are interested in, and see if they are willing to provide advice.
  • Reach out to established connections periodically and send them a personalized message. Remember - networking isn't about collecting business cards, it's about creating active relationships!

There is a good chance you are already using Facebook. Did you know it can also be used for professional networking? Keep in mind, across all your profiles it may be best to separate personal from professional.

  • Professionalize your profile and make use of privacy settings and friend lists to manage who can see personal content, and who can see professional content.
  • List your work history on your profile, which gives professional connections a quick look at your experience. List your current and past employers, your job title, a description of your role, and the years you were with the organization. What you list in this section should mirror your resume.
  • Build your network by joining professional groups and following company pages.
  • Post content and respond to other people's postings. Join discussions with people and organizations by answering questions, commenting, messaging, and linking to informative content. Remember to always be professional!

Twitter can be used to learn about industries, follow leaders and organizations, share content, and build your unique professional brand.

  • Create a Twitter handle using your real name, or a combination of your real name and profession. Keep it simple! You may also consider having a private personal and a public professional Twitter account.
  • Add a headshot photo that gives you a professional image, you can use the same headshot you have on LinkedIn.
  • Strengthen your bio by utilizing the right keywords or industry jargon.
  • Show knowledge and interest by linking to articles relevant to your field. Whenever possible, link to samples of your own work (i.e. portfolio, blog, or other online presence)!
  • Follow organizations and lists that are related to your field. If you see any interesting Tweetchats or Tweetups, join them! You can even create a list of target companies to quickly see a timeline of only those tweets.
  • Re-tweet, reply, and direct messages to establish connections. Remember that networking is all about relationships. Find recruiters, company employees, even your potential boss - retweet them and reply to their tweets.
  • Search and follow hashtags that are relevant to your field, or to your search. This can include something as broad as #internships. Also utilize social recruiting resources, like TweetMyJobs.

This is a great way to show up in more search results, and the site has a few extra tools that can help streamline your job or internship search.

  • Optimize your profile much like on LinkedIn. It should include information from your resume, and a professional profile picture. Use the About section to highlight information similar to your LinkedIn summary. Make it clear what types of positions and fields you are focusing on.
  • Use the circles feature to create circles that include recruiters, professionals, alumni, and influential people in your field. Participate in conversations and share content.
  • Participate in hangouts relevant to your interests. Some employers host information session hangouts!

This platform is excellent for visually displaying your talents, especially for industries that value creativity and design. If you want to go into graphic design, marketing, or the arts, this can help you set yourself apart.

  • Write a headline that includes your career goals and 2-3 of your top skills.
  • Create an infographic resume using charts, graphs, and other visuals to illustrate your work history, skills, and accomplishments, in a more visually appealing way. Keep in mind - this does not replace a traditional resume!
  • Develop boards featuring career or professional information that reflects your goals, or that you find inspiring.
  • Add links to videos, images, and other projects.
