Tribe Women's Swimming Finishes Third at CAA Championships

The William and Mary women's swimming team added two more school records to its week-long total on Saturday night, finishing the Colonial Athletic Association Championships strong with a third-place finish.  The Tribe scored 585 points, fourth-most ever, and finished behind only Towson (720) and James Madison (640).  If you counted only swimming scores, W&M was second overall behind only three-time defending champion Towson (629).

1650 Free
Opening the session in the 1650 free, sophomore Selina Fuller (Henrico, Va.) cut more than 14 seconds off of her lifetime-best and dropped below 17 minutes for the first time, finishing third overall in 16:47.54.  That was the third-fastest mile in school history, and ranks fuller second all-time among Tribe athletes.  Her 1,000-yard split of 10:10.81 was another lifetime-best, and also the third-fastest ever at W&M.  Junior Hannah Vester (Cincinnati, Ohio) capped of her season with a fifth-place showing, stopping the clock in 16:53.51.  That was the ninth-fastest time in school history, and moves Vester up to third all-time among athletes.  Her 1,000-yard split of 10:12.35 was the seventh-fastest ever swum, and Vester ranks fourth in school history in that event.

200 Back
In the 200 back, sophomore Sophie Rittenhouse (London, England) earned the bronze medal in 1:58.40, the fifth-fastest time in school history, and Fuller made the quick turn-around to take eighth overall in 2:03.26.  Freshman Emma Merrill (Fairfax, Va.) stopped the clock in 2:01.16 for 13th place, and junior Noelle Klockner (Marlboro, N.J.) cruised to a 16th-place 2:02.92.

100 Free
Sophomore Jaimie Miller (Houston, Texas) crushed her lifetime-best in the 100 free and earned her first NCAA qualifier, finishing second in 49.72 seconds.  An improvement of .36 over her prelims performance, Miller's time was the 16th-fastest race in school history and ranks her third all-time among athletes.  Senior Megan Howard (McLean, Va.) finished seventh in the championship heat at 51.04, and junior Sara Schad (North Yarmouth, Maine) took 14th overall in 51.52 seconds.

200 Breast
The Tribe's oldest standing school record was matched in the 200 breast, as sophomore Allie Christy (Williamsburg, Va.) finished fourth overall in 2:15.79, another .36 second improvement on her lifetime-best.  That matches the time put up by Hall of Famer Ruth Anne Miller '03 back in 2002, and qualifies Christy provisionally for the NCAA Championships.  Junior Jenny Lomicka (Henrico, Va.) also had a big time drop from prelims, improving .74 seconds to finish 11th in 2:19.15, and freshman Shannon Harrington (Philadelphia, Pa.) was 15th in 2:20.89.

200 Fly
The second school record of the night came in the 200 fly, where junior Jessie Ustjanauskas (West Hartford, Conn.) finished second overall in 2:00.16 to break the mark held by Erin Welshofer '10 (2:00.27 in 2009).  Freshman Abby Mack (Wayne, Pa.) was right behind her in third place, and broke her own freshman record with a time of 2:00.95, improving .41 from the morning prelims.  Classmate Rachel Anderson (Clifton, Va.) was 12th overall, stopping the clock in 2:05.33.

400 Free Relay
The Green and Gold closed out the championships with a fourth-place finish in the 400 free relay, swimming the course in 3:23.21, the fourth-fastest time in school history.  Senior Megan Howard led off with a 50.75 to close out her great career, and put the team in third as she handed off to Jaimie Miller.  Miller had an outstanding split of 49.73, third-best in the entire race, and then gave way to the freshman Mack who cleared her leg in 51.44.  Junior Sara Schad brought the Tribe home in 51.29 to complete the race, holding off a host of challengers to earn fourth place.
