Notice regarding Stanley Brown

Dear Colleagues,
I write with great sadness to share the news that Stanley E. Brown, former Director of Career Services, died on December 2. Mr. Brown received his B.A. from Emory & Henry College and his M.Ed. from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Following service in the U.S. Army as a cryptographer in Okinawa, Japan, he began his career in education as a teacher, elementary school principal and football coach. In 1969 he joined the staff at William & Mary as an administrator in Financial Aid, and his service to the College continued in his positions as Director of Corporate Relations and as acting Director of Development.
In 1981, he established the Department of Career Services where he served as Director until his retirement in 1994. He served as president of both the Virginia and Southern College Placement Associations and was recognized by both organizations with their Distinguished Service Awards. Additionally he was a member of the National College Placement Association. Mr. Brown was particularly proud to be selected by the W&M classes of 1978 and 1994 to serve as Honorary Marshal at their commencement ceremonies and to be recognized as an honorary member of the Young Guarde of the Society of the Alumni of William & Mary.
Mr. Brown was very active in the community and his church. He was past president of the United Fund of Greater Williamsburg and past president of the Kiwanis Club. He was a former member of the Williamsburg Land Conservancy and received their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. Mr. Brown was director of the Colonial Capital Branch of the Association for the Preservation of the Antiquities and volunteered as an onsite interpreter for Jamestown Rediscovery. As a member of the Williamsburg United Methodist Church, he has served as a lay leader and chairman of the Building Committee. In addition he was past president of the Cooperative Ministries of Williamsburg. Preceded in death by his daughter Jan, his parents and four siblings, Stan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judy, his daughter Bly, his son Stanley “Mac”, his grandchildren Austin, Eleanor, Kevin and Corinna, his sister Katherine and two brothers, Estil and Danny.
A service honoring his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on December 14 at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church. A reception will follow in the church reception hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Jamestown Rediscovery Project, Box 3610, Williamsburg, VA 23187 or to the Williamsburg Land Conservancy, 5000 New Point Road, Suite 3101, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
