Statements regarding Laura Flippin’s resignation from the BOV
Laura L. Flippin ’92 stepped down from the William & Mary Board of Visitors on Friday. Flippin, who was appointed to a four-year term in July 2010, submitted her resignation letter to Governor Bob McDonnell. The Governor will now appoint someone to fill the remaining two years of the term.
Below are statements regarding the resignation.
Laura Flippin’s letter to Gov. McDonnell:
“I have been privileged to serve as a member of the Board of Visitors of the College of William & Mary. I deeply appreciate your appointment of me to this position and the opportunity to serve my alma mater and the Commonwealth in this capacity.
I am committed to ensuring that William &Mary continues to be one of this nation's preeminent institutions of higher education, grounded in its historical legacy and focused on its dynamic future. To avoid distraction from that mission, I hereby submit my resignation from my position as a board member. My decision is guided by my respect and concern for the faculty, staff, students, alumni and other members of the William & Mary community. They are truly the university's most valuable and stellar assets.”
Statement from Jeffrey B. Trammell, Rector of the College:
“Ms. Flippin is a devoted alumna of William & Mary and has been a valued member of the Board of Visitors. I respect her decision to step down from the Board. We know Laura will remain an engaged member of this community. “
Statement from President Taylor Reveley:
“Laura’s devotion to her alma mater has been evident in many wonderful respects. The events of last September were distressing to her, the Board and the College. Her decision to step down from the Board of Visitors is in the best interests of all concerned.
As a campus community, we need to learn from this experience and talk more effectively with one another about the dangers of high-risk drinking. This is an issue at colleges nationwide, and William & Mary is not immune.”
