Sports & Recreation

Athletics are a source of pride at William & Mary. We're winning conference titles, and graduating scholar athletes at a rate higher than any other public university in the country. Across the university, an impressive 85% of undergraduates participate in some athletic or recreation program. Besides our Division I varsity sports teams, W&M has a thriving sport club and intramural scene, a multi-million dollar student recreation center and a ton of opportunities for outdoor adventure.

{{http://www.wm.edu/offices/wellness/campusrec/, Campus Recreation}} hosts the intramural Canoe Battleship Tournament — because we like competition, but we don't always like to take ourselves too seriously. Four teams enter the water arena, but only one will remain floating.
There’s no more loyal fan than a Tribe fan. One of our newer traditions is the annual Gold Rush game where students, faculty, staff and the community pack Kaplan Arena to cheer on the {{http://www.tribeathletics.com/index.aspx?path=mbball,W&M men’s basketball}} team.

Look around the NFL and you'll find several former Tribe standouts, including the Bill's head coach Sean McDermott ’98 and the Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin '95, the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl.

Our dozens of {{http://www.wm.edu/offices/wellness/campusrec/sportclubs/,sports clubs}} — more competitive than {{http://www.wm.edu/offices/wellness/campusrec/imsports/, intramurals}} without the time commitment of {{http://tribeathletics.com, varsity}} — are perfect for bringing out your inner athlete. Many clubs compete against other colleges and universities on the local, regional and national levels.

Tribe cyclists take on the many bike trails around campus as well as social rides and road races. Whether your passion is cycling, swimming, rock-climbing or sailing, there are teams for every athletic interest and every level of play.
The Pep Band revs up the crowd in Zable Stadium during a football game. This fun, scramble-style band, along with our W&M cheerleaders and dancers, Tribal Fever, and our pants-less mascot, {{http://www.wm.edu/about/mascot/about/, Reveley the Griffin}}, make home games a popular pastime for students, alumni and the community.
In arguably one of the best games in CAA conference history, Tribe standout Daniel Dixon’s 3-point jump shot with 0.8 seconds left in double overtime gave a 92-91 victory over Hofstra, sending the Tribe to the championship game.

Both men's and women’s rugby are offered as a {{https://www.wm.edu/offices/wellness/campusrec/sportclubs/index.php,club sport}}. In this match held during homecoming, it’s W&M vs. W&M – alumni vs. current students. Either way, it’s a win.
