Electives (9 - 12 credits)


  • Most eligible elective courses for the English minor will be taken in English literature, but certain courses in Creative Writing, Linguistics, Modern Languages, and Classical Studies can be applied, as outlined below.
  • At least 9 elective credits must be in courses, regardless of prefix, numbered 300 or above.
  • Students may count 3 elective credits across the following categories:

     in an English course at the 100 or 200 level;

     in an approved course in English linguistics listed on the English Department’s website; or

     in an approved Modern Languages or Classical Studies course, either in another language or in translation, listed on the English Department’s website.

  • Students may count 3 elective credits in creative or expository writing at the 300 or 400 level.

Students may seek approval for elective credit for courses not on the lists of eligible English linguistics, Modern Languages, and Classical Studies courses by petitioning the English Department Chair.
