About the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.
Campus Nomination Process
Overview: All William and Mary applications for the Gilman International Scholarship must be certified by study abroad advisor Molly DeStafney (Reves Center) and a Financial Aid officer. Once a student submits their online application through the Gilman website, the campus financial aid and study abroad advisor selected by the student will automatically receive an email. A Gilman Scholarship Workshop, facilitated by the Reves Center, is available for viewing online.
Applicants should be in the process of applying to, or accepted for, a study abroad or internship program of at least three weeks for students from four-year institutions, in a single country, and eligible for credit from the student’s home institution. Proof of program acceptance is required prior to award disbursement.
Application Format: Students apply for the Gilman Scholarship Program via an online application that they can access on the Gilman website approximately six weeks prior to the application deadline.
Note: Gilman Scholarship recipients can only receive the scholarship once. If a student previously declined the Gilman Scholarship, they are welcome to re-apply, as long as they still meet all eligibility requirements as listed above.
