Professor Palmer teaches a wide array of theatre courses in the Department of Theatre, Speech and Dance and has recently directed Dr. Faustus, Skin of Our Teeth, and Merchant of Venice for William and Mary Theatre. He was General Manager of the Virginia Shakespeare Festival from 1982 through 1986 and directed Hamlet. He received Port Folio's Best Director award for the Williamsburg Players production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and for the William and Mary Theatre production of A Lie of the Mind. He directed the VSF/Wedgewood Renaissance productions of A Delicate Balance, Copenhagen, and Long Day's Journey into Night. He is the author of four books: The Lighting Art (Prentice-Hall), The Critics' Canon (Greenwood), Tragedy and Tragic Theory (Greenwood), and The Contemporary British History Play (Greenwood).
