Class of '87
Ms. Whelan has an M.A. in National Security Studies from Georgetown University, an M.S. in National Security Strategy from the National War College, and a B.A. from the College of William and Mary, Class of 1987.
Ms. Whelan is the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Homeland Defense & Global Security at Office of the Secretary of Defense. The HD&GS portfolio of issues includes cyber policy, space policy, countering weapons of mass destruction policy and homeland defense policy. She oversees policy development and implementation of homeland defense preparedness and operations, anti-terrorism force protection plus critical infrastructure, defense continuity and crisis management, and DoD support to civil authorities, routine and disasters. Ms Whelan has twenty-one years of defense experience in the intelligence and policy communities, including a prior focus on Africa.
