For Prospective Students

Why We're Different

Research-oriented department with opportunities to participate in undergraduate research projects

One-on-one mentoring from faculty members

Close interaction and collaborations with Ph.D. students

Our majors continue their studies in some of the top graduate programs in the country

Our Physics students explore the basic science and technology essential for many occupations in modern industrial society. We support cutting-edge research focused on solving many fundamental and practical problems the world faces, while providing the best possible training for future scientists, educators, and world citizens.

Our graduate students teach, conduct original research, and attend classes. Undergraduate students develop a broad scientific foundation they can take in many directions.

Degree Programs

Majors choose one of three tracks: standard physics, pre-med, or Engineering Physics and Applied Design (EPAD).

Courses

Courses cover the standard topics in theoretical and experimental physics, as well as electives in specialized topics. See the Undergraduate Catalog to explore the complete list of Physics courses.  {{youtube:small:right|6Tv_AkaEW0I, An introduction to W&M's Department of Physics}}

Research

Our students are actively involved in research at the frontiers of modern science. All majors complete an independent research project under the supervision of a faculty member. This project culminates with a thesis and presentation, giving you a taste for what graduate work could be like. Our research laboratories offer a range of opportunities for student participation.

Student Activities

We host an active chapter of the Society of Physics Students.

Careers

Many physics majors go on to pursue advanced degrees in physics or related sciences. A physics education also provides a general scientific foundation for subsequent specialization in many other career paths: engineering, law, biology, mathematics, computer science, environmental sciences, finance, technical sales, industrial management, secondary education, and oceanography.
