For Prospective Students

Why We're Different

We bring eminent scholars to campus to give presentations on topics of philosophical and interdisciplinary interest

We sponsor an annual student conference, run by and for students

Majors take intensive seminars, providing close interaction with faculty and opportunities for spirited debate

Philosophy majors perform in the top 5-10 percent on graduate school entrance exams like the LSAT, GRE, and GMAT

The study of philosophy is excellent preparation for many graduate programs, and for just about any career that requires critical thinking

Our Philosophy students engage the deepest questions about who we are and how we should live, preparing them to lead reflective and purposive lives. They also learn to develop arguments, think critically and logically, communicate clearly, and write succinctly.  Philosophy complements other areas of study, including the sciences and Math, English, History, Government, and Psychology. Many Philosophy majors are double-majors.

Degree Programs

Philosophy courses cover topics such as freedom, right and wrong in the contemporary world, Greek philosophy, and ethics. See the Undergraduate Catalog to explore the complete list of Philosophy courses.

Our students pursue their own research projects as merit scholarship recipients, as independent researchers with Charles Center summer grants, and as students writing Honors theses. All work closely with a faculty advisor.

Student Activities

Students pursue their philosophical interests through the Diverse Philosophies Club, interacting with each other and with faculty members. The club is open to majors and non-majors alike.

Training in critical thinking, logic, and analytical writing is highly valuable to prospective employers. Our alumni pursue graduate study in Philosophy and various other academic fields, and enter professions such as law and nonprofit management, where training in philosophical analysis is particularly advantageous.
