2019 Concord Traveling Scholarship Recipient

aida.jpgPlease join us in congratulating Aida Campos who has just received the 2019 Concord Traveling Scholarship for Creative Writers. This summer she will travel to El Salvador to explore how the country’s Civil War during the 1980s affected her family. Between 1980 and 1992, it is broadly estimated that 75,000 Salvadoran lives were lost. Thousands of Salvadorans fled their homes and sought refuge around the world. Aida’s family arrived in the US during the ‘80s and ‘90s. She will be writing a sequence of poems that documents her personal connection to the Salvadoran diaspora and the brutal history that caused it. She also plans to chronicle the history of El Salvador as far back as the country’s indigenous inhabitants and as far forward as her parents’ immigration to the US. This chronology will showcase how the construction of her identity involves a transgenerational link to time, place, and ancestry.
