New Concentration in Public Health
As of fall 2014, there is a new concentration available to Kinesiology and Health Sciences majors. The Bachelor of Sciences (B.S.) in Kinesiology and Health Sciences with a concentration in Public Health is designed for students interested in the study of population health, disease prevention and control, and domestic and global health equity issues. Students will complete required courses in foundational areas of Public Health, such as Epidemiology, Social and Behavioral Sciences in Health, and Health Ethics. The required courses are complemented by Public Health-related electives such as Global Health, the Physiology of Obesity, and International Nutrition.
Students will also complete the core course requirements for the B.S. in Kinesiology and Health Sciences, including Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Statistics, plus any three courses in the Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, or Geology departments (in addition to the GER2B requirements). The full curriculum for the concentration is included below.
This concentration is appropriate as preparation for further study or employment in the Public Health or Global Health sectors. It may also be of interest to those preparing to enter other health professions, including medicine, nursing, and the allied health professions.

BS in Kinesiology and Health Sciences with a concentration in Public Health
1) Students receiving a concentration in Public Health must pass the following required courses:
KINE 270 Foundations of Epidemiology
KINE 280 Introduction to Public Health
KINE 300 Social and Behavioral Sciences in Health
KINE 303 Human Anatomy
KINE 304 Human Physiology
KINE 393 Health Ethics
KINE 394 Statistics and Evaluation (or any other introductory statistics course)
2) In addition, students must complete at least one of the following while accumulating the minimum of 34 credits in the major:
KINE 290 Global Health
KINE 301 Public Health and Physical Activity
KINE 355 International Nutrition
KINE 360 Physiology of Aging
KINE 405 Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health
KINE 455 Physiology of Obesity
KINE 460 Environmental Health
Lastly, students must complete three additional courses offered in any of the following departments: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, and Geology. These courses cannot be used to fulfill GER or College Curriculum requirements.
