College of William & Mary faculty member Scott Nelson may be heard this week on the radio program, With Good Reason. Nelson, the Legum Professor of History, discusses the economy and his new book, “A Nation of Deadbeats: An Uncommon History of America’s Financial Disasters.” The interview will air through Aug. 3. Broadcast times are posted online.“A Nation of Deadbeats” -- described by its publisher as a fresh, irreverent look at our addiction to debt -- looks at how the U.S.’s current economic crisis matches up historically to other crises and recessions. The publisher also notes the author “offers a crash course in America’s worst financial disasters—and a concise explanation of the first principles that caused them all.”
Nelson is a 19th-century U.S. historian and an award-winning author. His book, “Steel Drivin’ Man: John Henry, the Untold Story of an American Legend,” won the National Award for Arts Writing, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the Merle Curti Award for best book in American social history, and the Library of Virginia Literary Award for nonfiction. Nelson’s related book for young adults, “Ain't Nothing but a Man” (coauthored with Marc Aronson), received the Jane Addams Prize for the best book on social justice, as well as numerous other awards.
