Professor Mauthe Awarded First Prize

Professor Mauthe was recently awarded the First Prize in Category C of the 2012 Musica
Domani International Composition Competition for his piece Within Memory for cello and piano.
Category C encompasses works submitted for selected small chamber ensembles with or without
piano. The prize comes with a cash award and performances in the United States and Europe in
2013.

Earlier this Fall, Professor Mauthe was commissioned by the Kandinsky Trio in celebration of
their 25th anniversary. The work, Devolution, was performed at Roanoke College, Virginia Tech,
and the Jacksonville Center for the Arts. Devolution will be performed alongside Greg Bowers’
Gestalt Figures for piano trio and works by William and Mary composition students.
Additionally this semester, Professor Mauthe has been invited to guest lecture at Virginia Tech
on the keyboard music of Franz Liszt and career paths in the field of music theory and
