Malcom Gethers is the Recipient of a Southern Regional Education Board Doctoral Scholarship

Malcom Gethers, recipient of a Southern Regional Education Board Doctoral ScholarshiMalcom Gethers has become the Department of Computer Science's first-ever Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) Doctoral Scholar.  The SREB-State Doctoral Scholars Program is part of a nationwide initiative, the Compact for Faculty Diversity, to produce more minority Ph.D.s and encourage them to seek faculty positions.  Developed with support from the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Ford Foundation, the program offers financial support and other services to doctoral scholars nationwide.  With more than 500 graduates, and counting, the program currently assists more than 300 scholars actively pursuing Ph.D.s.

Malcom is a member of the Software Engineering Maintenance and Evolution Research Unit, led by his advisor Denys  Poshyvanyk, which is dedicated to advancing the state of the art in software maintenance and evolution research.  Malcom is interested in the mining of software repositories, feature/concept location, software measurement, and traceability link recovery and management.  He is the first-author on several conference papers, including a paper in the IEEE Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM'10) for which he won a Distinguished Paper Award.  Malcom also has papers which were among the best papers at their respective conferences (WCRE 2010 and ICSM'11) and subsequently invited to appear in special issues of journals.  Prior to attaining the SREB Doctoral Scholarship, he was a recipient of the Virginia Space Grant Consortium Graduate STEM Research Fellowship (2009-10, 2010-11).  Malcom has also served his research community and institution in various capacities (Program Committee member, WCRE'11 and ICSM'11-ERA; Webmaster, TEFSE'11 and WCRE'11; Student Volunteer, ICSE'11, ICSM'11, WSE'11; Secretary, Computer Science Graduate Student Association at the College of William & Mary).
