Sertzen '07 Awarded National Science Foundation Grant

Pamela Sertzen, a sociology department alumnus ('07), has received a prestigious 2011 Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation.  The fellowship provides $30,000 per year for research.  Ms. Sertzen is currently a Master of Arts candidate in the Department of Geography and the Environment at the University of Texas at Austin.

Ms. Sertzen's project is focused on Brazil and it seeks to gain an understanding of how children perceive the built environment of the favela, the differences between their community and the life they perceive in the asfalto, and the impacts of a positive, collective space on their perceptions of violence in daily life.  The project will contribute to a greater understanding of how children conceptualize an "unmapped" area.
