John Gilmour to appear on WHRV’s HearSay

John Gilmour, professor of government and the associate director of the Thomas Jefferson Program in Public Policy at William & Mary, will be featured Thursday, Feb. 17, on the radio show “HearSay with Cathy Lewis.” The live interview will be aired on public radio Channel WHRV, broadcast on public radio channel 89.5 FM, between noon and 1 p.m. The broadcast will be available later on the show’s website.
Gilmour, along with guest Dr. Alan Brinkley, the Allan
Nevins Professor of American History at Columbia University, will discuss the
office of the presidency and how presidents succeed – and fail. The duo will talk about presidential power,
how presidents use it, how much presidents rely on principles and how much they
rely on contingencies. The topic is part
of an upcoming symposium at Colonial Williamsburg, February 18 – 19.
Since 1995, Gilmour has taught in the Department of Government at William & Mary. He teaches a variety of courses in American politics and public policy. His research interests center on the United States Congress, and bargaining between Congress and the president. Gilmour is the author of two books, “Strategic Disagreement: Stalemate in American Politics” and “Reconcilable Differences? Congress, the Budget Process and the Deficit,” as well as articles in the “American Journal of Political Science,” the “Journal of Politics,” and “Legislative Studies Quarterly.” He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of California at Berkeley and his A.B. from Oberlin College.
