Background

Woody has been performing locally and regionally for more than three decades in groups ranging from duo to big bands. Performances include the Virginia Arts Festival, the Jazz on Granby Series, the Ewell Concert Series, the Williamsburg Regional Library Concerts, Jazz for Hope, the Town Point Jazz Festival, the Ella Fitzgerald Christopher Newport Jazz Series, the Wintergreen Performing Arts Series, and a National Public Radio live concert recording. He currently performs with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra Jazz Ensemble and performs regularly with his quartet in Havan Nights Jazz Lounge in Virginia Beach. He has recorded and produced two CD’s: “Laura Martier and Woody Beckner”, a compilation of jazz and pop vocal standards, and “At First Glance”, which is an all-original outing.

Areas of Specialization

In a personal, one-on-one setting, Woody helps the student become a better jazz performer through an in-depth method of improvisation study. He also coaches a guitar trio, helping the advanced student explore melody, soloing, and comping (accompaniment).
