WM Summer Intensive at Tsinghua University

Each year, the College of William and Mary sponsors W&M Summer in Beijing, an intensive faculty-led summer study abroad program at Tsinghua University in China. Situated in the former royal gardens of the Qing Dynasty, Tsinghua University is one of China’s most prestigious universities. Its beautiful garden campus, world-renowned research, and high-quality teaching have attracted and inspired generations of talented students. The W&M Summer in Beijing program is the only Chinese study abroad program that is fully integrated into the William and Mary curriculum. The Program provides students with a full immersion experience while earning William and Mary credit and working with William and Mary faculty. Students take language classes with qualified Chinese instructors trained in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. 

Students can earn 12 credits toward the W&M degree OR up to 11 credits toward the Chinese major:

  • 8 Credits in Chinese Language at the 200, 300, or 400 level (taught in Chinese by Chinese teachers at Tsinghua University)
  • 3 Credits Field Research in Contemporary Chinese Culture (taught in English and Chinese by William and Mary faculty)
  • 1 Credit in Chinese Culture through Martial Arts

Additionally, students enjoy the following resources and opportunities:

  • Two weekend faculty-organized excursions to cultural areas outside Beijing (planned 2014 trips: Shenyang and its industrial zones, and Wutai Mountain in Shanxi Province)
  • Weekly sponsored excursions in Beijing
  • Weekly guest lectures by scholars, officials and entrepreneurs in Beijing
  • Housing on Tsinghua University campus in international student dorms

Requirements: Students must have one year of college-level Mandarin.
