In Memoriam: Alastair Connell, MD

December 29, 1929 - May 29, 2015 It is with deep sadness that the Department of Kinesiology & Health Sciences reports the recent passing of Dr. Alastair Connell.

2nd annual Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders

The fellows will spend four weeks in Charlottesville to learn about innovative leadership, good governance, and social entrepreneurism before coming to W&M and for the final two weeks of the program. In Williamsburg, the program will focus on approaches to development with a focus on community participation and transparency.

College partners with EVMS for physicians’ assistant program

The College of William and Mary is expanding its partnership with Eastern Virginia Medical School with a new Early Assurance Program (EAP) for the EVMS Physician’s Assistant program. Students receive prerequisite credits towards their application to EVMS from courses they have taken at the College.

Prof. Harris was part of a panel of invited speakers at the 3rd International Forum of Sport Industry in Taipei, Taiwan. The forum was hosted by the University of Taipei and jointly sponsored by the New Taipei City Government and the Chinese Taipei Triathlon Association which coordinated the event with its national championship in Yi-Lan.

On August 8, 2014, Professor Ken Kambis and Senior Instructor Kim Whitley of the Kinesiology & Health Sciences Department, successfully summited a 14,134 ft. Colorado mountain, unofficially referred to as Mount William & Mary.

New Concentration in Public Health

As of fall 2014, there is a new concentration available to Kinesiology and Health Sciences majors. The Bachelor of Sciences (B.S.) in Kinesiology and Health Sciences with a concentration in Public Health is designed for students interested in the study of population health, disease prevention and control, and domestic and global health equity issues.

Professor Looft-Wilson 2014 recipient of Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence

The award, established with a generous gift from Joseph J. Plumeri II ’66, D.P.S. ’11, recognizes 20 faculty members each year for exemplary achievements in teaching, research and service. Faculty members have used the award to enhance their research and teaching and to support travel to scholarly conferences.

Turn up the Enya: Students relieve stress with yoga

Patricia K. Charles, a faculty member in the department of kinesiology and health sciences and current instructor of the one-credit yoga classes, noted the vast increase of research and studies throughout the country, most recently at Boston University’s School of Medicine and UCLA, that verify the positive psychological benefits of yoga.

W&M project impacting incarcerated, pregnant women and their babies

Approximately 70 women have received help from the William & Mary Healthy Beginnings Project over the last year. The project aims to provide nutritional support and counseling to incarcerated, pregnant women, and its founders are already seeing positive results.

Robin Looft-Wilson receives one of ten EVMS/W&M collaborative research projects

Ten research projects involving faculty at William & Mary and Eastern Virginia Medical School will each receive $10,000 in funding as part of a program to foster collaboration between researchers at the two institutions. Robin Looft-Wilson is co-investigator on the project "Role of Nitric Oxide Synthase in the Development of Retinopathy of Prematurity."

Schroeder Center Awards Grants to Faculty

This spring, the Schroeder Center awarded its first set of Small Grants Program awards to four faculty members for research in health policy. The new program will increase support for faculty-led health policy research projects at William & Mary, an important objective of the Schroeder Center for Health Policy.
