Ithamar Gruenwald Professor Emeritus, Jewish Philosophy, Tel Aviv University

‘In the eyes of many’, writes Professor Ithamar Gruenwald, ‘rituals constitute a riddle. Many people do not understand what makes rituals work and how the doing of rituals is essential to reaching specific goals’. Drawing from social ethnography, anthropology and the comparative study of religions, Professor Gruenwald will address this issue in a lecture for the William & Mary campus, arguing that rituals are not only ‘the dynamic core of social and religious systems’, but also ‘vital for the orderly functioning of bureaucratic organizations and structures’.

Ithamar Gruenwald is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Jewish Philosophy at Tel Aviv University, where he also founded the Graduate Program in Religious Studies.
