PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The dissertation process is one of the most challenging academic endeavors you'll face—but you don't have to navigate it alone. Perhaps you’re struggling to make progress, feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure about how to move forward, or perhaps you’re just feeling isolated by the process. DissConnect can help by offering support and the community of a cohort of peers!

This comprehensive dissertation coaching program offers structure, accountability, and guidance. We partner with you in navigating obstacles and finding your path to dissertation completion. Offered by the Graduate Center and the Graduate Writing and Communication Center, 

The DissConnect Cohort will benefit from:
  • Structured Progress: Learn how to manage your dissertation through achievable milestones and goals, beginning with an initial assessment to develop your personalized roadmap
  • Expert Guidance: Receive valuable feedback through one-on-one coaching sessions with experienced academic mentors who have successfully navigated the dissertation process
  • Effective Accountability Systems: Stay on track with regular check-ins and progress reports designed to maintain momentum
  • Enhanced Writing Support: Overcome writer's block and strengthen your academic writing through focused writing sprints
  • Work-Life Balance Strategies: Learn effective techniques to manage dissertation work alongside other professional and personal responsibilities
  • Defense Preparation: Build confidence for your defense with targeted coaching on presentation skills and strategies for addressing committee questions

Ideal Candidates

This program is designed for W&M doctoral students who are:
  • At any stage of the dissertation process (from prospectus to final chapters)
  • Experiencing challenges with progress or momentum
  • Seeking improved time management and work-life balance
  • Looking for accountability and structured support
  • Needing guidance on research methods or academic writing techniques

Program Components and Dates:

  • JULY 7-11, 2025: Required Writing Retreat (in person only, 9-4 each day). The week includes an opportunity to take Academic Writing, a short course (optional but encouraged) 
  • Participating in Summer Writing Sprints is strongly encouraged
    • Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in person or via Zoom: July 16, 23, 30, August 6, 13.
  • Monthly Cohort Meetings and Coaching Sessions in the Fall: Dates/Times TBD
