Sigma Gamma Epsilon at W&M

The National Honor Society for the Earth Sciences

Purpose

Every semester, a few hundred W&M students take one of the introductory geology classes and its associated lab. Our primary activity involves offering tutoring sessions to these intro students, in order to help them work through problem sets, study for exams, or even identify the common rocks and minerals.

We tutor on Sunday evenings in room 230 of McGlothlin-Street Hall from 7-9 p.m. during the school year.

We are also closely tied with the W&M geology club, which organizes events to further build the sense of community that permeates the geology department.

Joining

In order to join the society of Sigma Gamma Epsilon, a few requirements must be met. They are:

  • Completion of 10 or more semester hours in geoscience courses
  • Maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA in those courses
  • Maintaining an overall GPA of at least 2.67

If you believe you are qualified and would like to join, please reach out to either the [[e|jcensley, chapter president]], Joanne Ensley, or faculty advisor, [[beowen, Brent Owens]], for more information.
