Assistant Professor of Geology

Position Summary: The Department of Geology at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in physical geomorphology with preference given to those who apply field and/or remote sensing techniques to solve geologic problems.

Additional areas of specialty may include remote sensing, GIS, shallow geophysics, basin analysis, stratigraphy, and planetary geology. Appointment will begin August 10, 2023.

The applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant externally funded research program that incorporates mentorship of undergraduate research students. Teaching expectation is 2 courses per semester.

Successful applicants must possess the skills to teach Earth Surface Processes and other geology major courses as well as to contribute courses in geology at the introductory through advanced undergraduate level and advise research students in their subdiscipline.

Administrative & Fiscal Coordinator (Geology)

Position Summary: W&M’s Department of Geology invites qualified applications for the position of Administrative and Fiscal Coordinator. Under the supervision of the Department Chair, this position manages all administrative and financial needs to include leadership and faculty support for several full-time, affiliated, and visiting faculty members. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Chair and faculty support to include administrative personnel services and course scheduling;
  • Office management to include establishing administrative and operational priorities, communications, and technological support;
  • Fiscal administration and management of department indexes; determines and recommends options for addressing budget issues, keeps project directors apprised of account status, authorizes expenditures, and identifies cost effective alternatives;
  • Facilitating processing of transactions and procurement of equipment and services;
  • Onboarding and supervision of student assistants;
  • Records management;
  • Liaising with multiple units on campus such as Accounts Payable, Dean of Arts & Sciences Office, Human Resources, Procurement, Student Financial Aid, and the Office of Sponsored Programs;
  • Monitoring facility issues and plans and coordinates structural and cosmetic repairs with Facilities Management staff;
  • Coordinating transportation and lodging arrangements for class field trips;
  • Arranging for maintenance on department vehicles.
