Ancient Languages was one of W&M's original departments

Our Classical Studies students gain historical perspective, critical thinking, and communication skills. Studying the culture, history, and archaeology of ancient Mediterranean civilizations provides a solid background for understanding modern cultures. Language instruction in Ancient Greek and Latin can reveal deeper meanings of classic texts, and provides a basis for learning modern languages.
Our Post Baccalaureate students spend a year taking courses in Latin, Greek, and classical civilization. The program is flexible, so you can take courses that suit your interests and needs.
Degree Programs
Majors focus their studies by concentrating in one of four areas: Ancient Greek, Latin, Classical Civilization, or Classical Archaeology.
Courses

Research
Opportunities for undergraduate research engage students through the development of their technical skills and critical abilities. Students can work closely with a faculty member on their research, do an independent research project, intern at museums, or go abroad to archaeological field schools. We run classically-oriented summer study-abroad programs in Italy and Greece, and are affiliated with the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, the American Academy in Rome, the American Research Center in Sofia, and the Intercollegiate Center in Rome.
Student Activities
We have a dynamic Classics Club that meets regularly, with activities ranging from Classically-themed games to movie viewings. We also sponsor a local chapter of the Classics Honor Society, Eta Sigma Phi.
Careers
Our alumni have continued on to graduate programs in Classics as well as law school and medical school. They have also pursued careers in many non-academic professions: pharmacy, banking, architecture, business, museum work, and library science, among others.
