Student IRB & Travel

Student IRB

  • If you are working with human subjects in any way, exemption by the Student Institutional Review Board or the Protection of Human Subjects Committee is required UNLESS your research falls under your faculty advisor's exemption through the PHSC. Ask your advisor to be sure before you begin the IRB process. Your IRB protocol must be exempted before you can receive funding from the Charles Center. Note that the IRB requires a significant amount of time to complete and requires that both you and your advisor successfully complete an online training module - do not wait to begin the process at the end of the semester!
Travel
  • Important Note: All students receiving summer research grants are required to abide by William & Mary travel guidelines. Students may be required to submit an additional application to the Travel Review Committee based on location.
  • If you plan to travel abroad for your research (and it is safe to do so), the Charles Center requires you to purchase insurance for your time abroad. The Global Education Office at the Reves Center strongly recommends that you purchase Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) insurance. Read more about CISI and how to purchase it from the Reves Center.
  • If you plan to travel to a country which is on the State Department's Travel Warning list, you must petition for approval from the College under the W&M Travel Warning Policy. Petitions for summer Charles Center-funded travel/research/internship in a country under a Travel Warning must be received by Nick Vasquez, International Travel and Security Manager, by the deadline set in the Reeves Center (usually mid-April). See the Reves Center for International Studies and plan to submit your petition prior to the Charles Center application deadline.
