About the Beinecke Scholarship

The Beinecke Scholarship Program provides scholarships for the graduate education of young people with exceptional promise. The program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a graduate course of study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Applicants must be degree-seeking juniors who plan to enter a research-focused master's or doctoral program in the arts, humanities, or social sciences and must have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid during their undergraduate years. The award includes a $4,000 received immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 received while attending graduate school. The Scholarship Program supports graduate education in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Campus Nomination Process

OverviewInterested William & Mary students should email all application components (including recommendations and transcripts) to the Charles Center inbox by the campus deadline. The application components, as well as the necessary forms, are available on the Beinecke Scholarship website.

Application FormatBeinecke does not have an application portal. All application materials are submitted by the William & Mary Director of National Fellowships.

Deadlines and Timeline: 

  • January 26 at midnight: Campus Deadline (see the requirements in the Overview section above)
  • Early February: Campus Interviews Take Place
  • Early February: Campus finalists will have a short window to edit applications after the campus interviews before submitting their applications in time to meet the national deadline.

NominationsWilliam & Mary has the opportunity to nominate one student for the Beinecke Scholarship.

National Application Process

The national deadline is February 12, 2020. All students must meet the campus deadline (posted above) in order to be eligible for endorsement by the national deadline.
