Freeman Intern Fellowship

The Charles Center, in partnership with the Asian and Middle East Studies Program and Asian and Pacific Islander-American Studies Program, will support 20 internships in Spring, 2018 or Summer, 2018.  Each student will receive $5,000 to aid in the cost of travel and living expenses. The duration of the internship must be a minimum of six full-time weeks. 

Eligibility:
  • The Freeman Intern Fellowship is limited to continuing undergraduates.
  • All academic fields of study are encouraged to apply.
  • The Freeman Fellowship supports internships in all countries in East Asia, with the exception of South Asia (e.g., India and Pakistan). Internships in China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan), Japan, Singapore, Philippines, and Korea, are especially encouraged.
  • Fellowships are limited to United States citizens.
  • The fellowship cannot be used to fund study abroad and cannot be used to pay third-party study abroad or internship providers.

Internship Examples:
Bement School, Shanghai
The Bement School provides an education based on time-honored school traditions and values for children in kindergarten through ninth grade, day and boarding. 
Interns will serve as co-teachers for intensive English and culture courses focusing on ciritical thinking skills and self-expression. 
Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Jakarta
CSIS is an independent, non-profit organization focusing on policy-oriented studies on domestic and international issues.
The internship will focus on interational, economic, and security issues in Southeast Asia and ES.  
Coconuts, Manila
Coconuts Manila is the Manila operations for Coconuts.co, a news and lifestyle website that produces in-depth coverage of what’s happening in Bangkok, Manila, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bali, Yangon, and beyond.
Coconuts is seeking a digital media intern with experience in media production. 
Cocoon Capital Partners, Singapore
Cocoon Capital is a seed-stage venture firm focusing on early-stage, digital companies across Southeast Asia and India. 
Don Bosco Academy, Bacolor, Pampanga, Philippines
Don Bosco Academy is a private, Catholic, co-educational institution seeking two interns to teach at the elementary and junior high level. One intern will focus on applied arts and the second intern will focus on physical education/recreation sports.
East Asia Institute, Seoul
The East Asia Institute is an independent thinktank that strives to transform East Asia into a society of nations based on liberal democracy, market economy, open society, and peace. To this end, the EAI works to propagate liberal values and ideas including diversity, tolerance, accountability, and transparency through research, education, and international exchange.
Internship will focus on democratic governance. 
Hiroshima Peace Institute (HPI) (Hiroshima City University), Hiroshima
HPI is a research institute affiliated with Hiroshima City University. Located in the city that experienced the first atomic bombing in human history, the institute aims to develop into an international research center that can, through academic research, contribute towards nuclear abolition, the resolution of global issues, the realization of sustainable global peace, and the development of local communities.
Institute for Peace and Unification (IPUS) at Seoul National University, Seoul
Guided by a vision to achieve sustainable peace in the Korean Peninsula, the IPUS seeks to create the necessary discourse, policies, values and culture to establish multidisciplinary and convergent perspectives in peace studies.
Internship will focus on nuclear deterrence between China and North Korea and will include editing responsibilities for IPUS peace studies journal.
Nippon Neuroscience, Tokyo
Nippon Neuroscience is a medical devices start up that endeavors to close the gap in access to life changing therapies for patients fighting central nervous system disorders in Japan.
Internship focus will include research on market and assets in Japanese and foreign markets. 
National University of Singapore (NUS)-Middle East Institute, Singapore
Middle East Institute exists to advance understanding of the Middle East, and to deepen engagements between the Middle East and Asia. 
Sant Maral Foundation, Gallup Poll, Ulaanbaator
The Sant Maral Foundation (SMF) was established in September 1994 as a public benefit, self-governing, non-profit non-government organization. The goal of the foundation is to contribute to Mongolia's social development geared towards the creation of a society based upon the principles of freedom, justice, and democracy. Since its formation, SMF established itseld as the premier Mongolian polling institution in the country.
Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD), Taipei
TFD strives to play a positive role in consolidating Taiwan's democracy and fortifying its commitment to human rights. 
United Chinese Group, Taipei
United Chinese Group concentrates its main business in producing innovative and high quality artificial floral and seasonal home decorative products. The intern will should have an interest in marketing, cross border trade, direct to consumer brands (like Warby Parker, ModCloth, or Casper), and also learning Mandarin in Taipei.  Duties would include sourcing and product coordination, online marketing, content marketing coordination, and coordination between New York and Asia. Duties also may include competitive monitoring and a final report that suggests future projects and directions to enhance market position. 
VC Growth Partners, Singapore
VCGP is a stage-agnostic private investment group that targets high-growth and highly disruptive businesses in Tech, Advisory, and Consumer verticals.
Internship will focu on research in business opportunities, acquisitions, etc.
Wildlife Conservation Society, Cambodia
The Wildlife Conservation Society saves wildlife and wild places worldwide. We do so through science, global conservation, and education. 
Internship will focus on GIS and forestry. 

Internships may be in private firms, government agencies, or non-profits.  

Internships may take place immediately before or after a study abroad program. They may also be contemporaneous with study abroad programs, as long as the internship does not interfere with the academic program and the time is equivalent to six full-time weeks.

All students are responsible for knowing and adhering to the visa guidelines of the host country. 

Participating students are required to participate in a pre-internship orientation session in April 2018. While in East Asia, the intern is required to blog about their experience throughout the internship.

Upon return to William and Mary, the student is required to enroll in a three-credit COLL 300 course in AMES/APIA  (Freeman Fellows East Asia Think Tank) in Fall, 2018, where students will share their experience with fellow interns and pursue project that come out of their experiences in East Asia.
