Biology Seminar Series Welcomes Back Alumnus Dr. Zac Elmore for Homecoming Weekend; Science Departments Host Open House Saturday

Homecoming weekend at William & Mary is off to an exciting start with a special installment of the Fall 2025 Biology Seminar series. On Thursday, October 16, Dr. Zac Elmore—a proud alumnus and co-founder of Lucidigm Therapeutics—returns to campus to present his latest research. The seminar, titled “Engineered Immunoglobulin Cleaving Enzymes for Gene Therapy, Organ Transplantation and Autoimmune Disease,” will begin at 4:00 p.m. in ISC 1221.

Zac ElmoreDr. Elmore, now Chief Scientific Officer at Lucidigm Therapeutics (a Duke University spinout), leads efforts to develop engineered enzymes that can precisely modulate immune responses. His work has the potential to transform fields like organ transplantation, gene therapy, and autoimmune disease treatment. Those interested in learning more can read about Lucidigm’s work here. Students, faculty, and alumni are encouraged to attend Thursday’s seminar for a firsthand look at the future of biotechnology—and to welcome back one of W&M Biology’s own. For those wishing to meet with Dr. Elmore during his visit, please reach out to Dr. Oli Kerscher (opkers@wm.edu).

The scientific energy continues on Saturday, as multiple science departments join forces for a Homecoming Open House in the Integrated Science Center (ISC) from 10 a.m. to noon. Attendees are invited to enjoy light refreshments and a light breakfast while exploring all that the sciences at William & Mary have to offer. Be sure to stop by the Biology department’s table to grab some exclusive biology swag, take a guided tour of the stunning campus greenhouse, and reconnect with old friends and professors. The open house is also a great opportunity to meet some of the newest members of the Biology faculty.

As Homecoming brings alumni, students, and faculty together, this weekend is the perfect time to celebrate both the university’s traditions and its ongoing pursuit of scientific discovery. Whether you’re catching up on the latest advances in biology, picking up a breakfast treat, or just reminiscing with fellow Tribe members, there’s something for everyone on campus this weekend.

Don’t miss out on this unique Homecoming celebration—where science, community, and tradition all come together under one roof.
