Videos

Videos can be a great addition to your website. Here we discuss how to handle them in Cascade so they show up properly on your pages.

Our Cascade system is optimized to work with YouTube.

Display a Video that's already on YouTube

If the video you want to display is already on a W&M YouTube channel, you're in business. University Communications regularly publishes video content on YouTube. Check out their channel and see if you like anything.

There are two ways to embed a YouTube video on your site:

  1. Embed a video in the content block [W&D]
  2. Add a YouTube widget [W&D]
Display a Video that's Not on YouTube

Well, you have to load the video to YouTube. But first – be mindful that you're taking on work that might be more than you expected:

  1. All content on W&M websites must comply with accessibility standards. With video, that means captions. YouTube makes a pretty good first cut at auto-captioning videos. But you'll need to download and correct the captions file, and this takes (a lot) more time than you might think: three times the length of the video or longer in most cases.
  2. You need to secure copyright permission for any music used in the video.
  3. You might need to clean up the video a little (e.g., trim the beginning and end).
Load to YouTube

There is a YouTube channel for Arts & Sciences. Save your video in mp4 format, share it on Box, and someone in the Dean's Office will load it up.

You will then need to edit the captions file. Fix the captions and send the file back, and new file will be paired up with the video. Once the edited captions are up, the video will go public and you then embed it.

Then you can display the video on your website (see above).

Please do not display videos from a personal or nonW&M YouTube channel.

This is a great resource on captioning videos.
