My current research examines the development of the oil industry in the Arabian Sea from the 1940s to the present. Using ethnographic and archival materials, I explore the migration of Indians to the oilfields of the Arabic-speaking Persian Gulf. I argue the specificity of oil production in the Arabian Sea has influenced regimes of citizenship, politics, and family life in India and the Gulf. For this project, I conducted research in India, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
