Why W&M

During one of the many admissions information sessions I sat through during my application process, one speaker said something that stuck in my mind: “There are over 5,000 higher education institutions in this country, and you can only enroll at one.” During your junior and senior years of high school, you are always encouraged to find the “perfect fit,” as if there is some college somewhere tailor-made just for you. Of course, there isn’t. Like in all things, some amount of compromise is necessary in selecting a college. However, I consider myself very lucky to have found in William & Mary a school that demands little compromise. Everywhere I toured claimed a great relationship between faculty and students, a tight-knit community, and limitless opportunities for undergraduate research. However, very few schools actually have these qualities. But during my time at the 1693 Scholars Finalist Weekend, every student I spoke to told me that William & Mary actually does exhibit all these things. In addition to the academic opportunities, the history and tradition that permeate the campus proved irresistible to me. When you take all of these factors and combine them with the unbeatable perks given to 1693 Scholars, it separated William & Mary from every other college I applied to. William & Mary became the obvious choice for me.
