New Students

NOTE: The CSS Profile and FAFSA are only necessary if you are seeking need-based financial aid. Merit funds are evaluated and awarded by the Office of Admission.

We have a separate application deadline for the CSS Profile and FAFSA to create financial aid estimates for Early Decision (ED) Students. Any ED student who did not complete the CSS Profile and FAFSA in the fall but still wants to apply for financial aid must also complete the FAFSA and CSS Profile before March 1st. A table is at the bottom of this page to outline the priority dates based on your application classification.

Every student applying to W&M is encouraged to apply for financial aid. The first step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for federal aid.  Entering new and transfer students are strongly encouraged to complete the CSS Profile to receive consideration for state and institutional aid programs. The CSS Profile does have a cost associated with each profile that is submitted. The College Board will offer a fee waiver to applicants that meet certain criteria. W&M does not provide CSS Profile fee waivers. We will not request the CSS Non-Custodial Parent Profile (Household B) at this time. The College Board has information on the process of completing the CSS Profile (1-844-202-0524).

We do not have a separate institutional aid application. However, we frequently ask for additional documentation for undergraduate applicants after reviewing your processed FAFSA and Profile. Please submit any requested documents as soon as possible after we request them (generally, we look for a two-week turnaround). Delay in submission could limit your eligibility for grant funds.

Submit your FAFSA application electronically at The FAFSA can now even be completed using an App for your smartphone or tablet (Android and IOS versions are available). Our federal school code is 003705. If you do not have an FSA User ID and password (see below), make sure you print out and submit the signature page to FAFSA. Your FAFSA will not be processed without signatures. Please note that mailing the paper FAFSA/signatures to FAFSA will delay the time it takes for your FAFSA to be processed and submitted to William & Mary. Submission using digital submission is the preferred method.

For Spring 2022 Transfer Applicants - please make sure you file/update your 2021-2022 FAFSA. We strongly encourage that you utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when completing the FAFSA. The 2019 taxes will be used in this FAFSA filing.

For Fall 2022 Applicants - The FAFSA will be available starting on October 1, 2021, for the 2022-2023 academic year. We strongly encourage that you utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when completing the FAFSA. The 2020 taxes will be used in this FAFSA filing.

If you have not previously done so, we urge you to obtain an FSA User ID and password before starting the FAFSA application process. If you are a dependent student, one of your parents will also need to obtain an FSA User ID and password. If you have difficulty with the FAFSA or setting up the FSA User ID and password, you may need to contact FAFSA (1-800-433-3243). Your FSA User ID can be used to make any needed FAFSA corrections and to monitor your status with federal aid programs. You will also be able to use it to sign certain Master Promissory Notes for Direct Student and Parent Loans.

CSS Profile

Our CSS Profile school code is 5115. Select "Fall 20221Spring 2021" or "Fall 2022/Spring 2023" depending on your admission application. You should set aside a considerable amount of time to collect and organize your financial information and complete the Profile. While completing the Profile, DO NOT USE your browser's back button. The CSS Profile does have a cost associated with each profile that is submitted. If you are eligible, the College Board will offer a fee waiver to applicants that meet certain criteria. W&M does not provide CSS Profile fee waivers.

Please note that we are not requesting the supplemental non-custodial parent information/profile.

Transfer students DO need to complete the Profile.

If you are an applicant for Spring 2022, please make sure you submit the CSS Profile and FAFSA for the 2021-22 academic year (applications for both years are available at this time).

There are several records you should have on hand when completing the FAFSA and Profile:

  1. Your prior-prior year (2019 for the 2021-22 Applications and 2020 for the 2022-23 Applications) federal tax return and, depending on your status as a dependent or independent student, that of your parents or spouse. You should not need your state taxes.
  2. Other records such as W-2 forms, K-1, 1099, business and farm records, and bank statements.
  3. Leave and Earnings Statement for military personnel.

*Note: If the above records are not available when you file the FAFSA and Profile, you should use estimates. Do not miss the priority filing dates!

Students submitting the FAFSA and CSS Profile by the following dates are given priority in determining eligibility:

When your FAFSA has been processed, you will be emailed a Student Aid Report (SAR). This is a summary of the information submitted to the processor. Please review it and make any needed corrections. Corrections are best made using digital FAFSA options. Do not mail this form to the financial aid office. Instead, please keep it for your records. W&M will receive the same information electronically, assuming that you designated us as one of the schools to receive your data (by using school code 003705). Questions concerning your SAR should be directed to the federal processor at 1-800-433-3243.
