W&M student affairs hailed as a promising place to work

The Division of Student Affairs facilitates many facets of student life at William & Mary, including campus living, health and wellness, leadership and engagement, career development, and student success.
This year, that team saw a success of its own. For the fifth time since 2014, William & Mary was recognized as one of the Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs in 2020 by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.
“It is enormously rewarding to see William & Mary recognized again this year,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Virginia Ambler ’88 Ph.D. ’06. “I am grateful to work with colleagues who share a deep commitment to creating vibrant, diverse, and supportive workplaces and to championing work-life balance, professional development and inclusive excellence across the division.”
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education has published a list of the best places to work in student affairs for the last seven years.
This year, William & Mary joins the list with 26 other schools across the country, ranking as one of only two schools from Virginia.
Criteria for receiving this recognition cover a wide variety of topics. According to the Diverse: Issues in Higher Education press release, collegiate institutions qualified “with a focus on workplace diversity, staffing practices and work environment, family friendliness, salary/benefits and professional development opportunities,” and more.
To Ambler, this recognition aligns with how her division works in its day-to-day mission.
“William &Mary’s institutional values include a commitment to flourishing,” she said. “This recognition from Diverse: Issues in Higher Education celebrates and affirms our ongoing effort to ‘empower those who live, learn, and work here to make choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life.’”
William & Mary will receive the award at the American College Personnel Association’s annual meeting on March 2-5, 2020, in Nashville, Tennessee.
