I want to begin by thanking you for making Family Weekend a success. Our students’ loved ones are a major part of our community and I greatly appreciate your efforts to show them that W&M is a place where their students can belong and flourish.
Here are the Top 5 Things to Know this week:
- During last week’s Board of Visitors meetings, W&M announced a commitment to explore the creation of a new academic unit in computing and data science. This initiative emerged organically from computer science faculty interest and is in its early stages. I am hopeful that a dynamic presence in the area of computational sciences will enable W&M to meet the substantial student interest and workforce needs in that area, help us retain our highly qualified faculty, and recruit new members. If our exploratory work indicates that the creation of a new unit makes sense for our university, there will be an extensive national search to attract an external, strong, and experienced leader to lead it. I look forward to continuing to work with you on this initiative.
- This Friday, Sept. 30, the Charles Center for Academic Excellence is celebrating the summer research of nearly 200 students in its Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium, from 10:45 a.m.–4 p.m. in Swem Library. Drop by for inspiration, conversation, and refreshments. The full schedule and presentation details can be found on the Symposium webpage.
- Also this Friday, Sept. 30, from 10 a.m.–1 p.m., Tribe Innovation is hosting a panel event, Innovation at Work, in Brinkley Commons in Miller Hall. During the panel, attendees will hear from a variety of voices representing different industries (consulting, healthcare, biotechnology, and more) and will have the opportunity to network and personally connect with these professionals. Please note that this event is open to all William & Mary students and a free lunch will be provided. If you’re willing and able to share this information with your students, please do so. Registration is required.
- The 13th Annual Lemon Project Spring Symposium opened its call for proposals. Individuals or panels of three to four people are welcome to apply. This opportunity is open to multidisciplinary expertise, specifically “proposals from people who focus on Black life, history, and culture, including but not limited to academic and descendant researchers, educators, activists, and members of Greater Williamsburg communities and beyond.” November 18 is the deadline to apply.
- This week’s shout-out goes to the Law School’s Institute of Bill of Rights Law, which recently hosted its annual Supreme Court Preview. The event brought together distinguished legal scholars, advocates, journalists, and others to discuss the Court’s upcoming term. In addition, the Institute hosted and participated in a recording of The Divided Argument podcast as part of the Scalia-Ginsburg Collegiality Series. This work is a prime example of what we strive to achieve as part of our Democracy Initiative, and I thank everyone involved.
