Summary

With National Hispanic Heritage Month underway, I’d like to highlight some opportunities for our community to get engaged, including William & Mary Libraries’ virtual display of books by Latinx authors. Additionally, the Hispanic Studies department is holding an event, Celebrating Our Community, for Latinx alumni, undergraduate, graduate students, staff, and faculty on Sept. 29, from 5-7 p.m.

Heritage months provide an impactful opportunity to learn more about cultures, people, and history. I encourage our community to participate in open conversations and available events, especially during these times of recognition.

With that, here are the Top 5 Things to Know this week:

  1. This Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 4:30 p.m., the Global Research Institute (GRI) will host an Open House. This opportunity to learn more about GRI’s multidisciplinary research and scholarship is open to all. Registration is not required, and there will be food and music. For more information, please contact Martha Reilly at mreilly@wm.edu.
  2. On Thursday, Sept. 22, from 3:30–5 p.m., the Muscarelle Museum of Art is holding a New Faculty & Staff Open House. During this time, attendees can view The Human Frame: Prints by Leonard Baskin, a student-curated exhibit, before it ends on Sept. 25; get a preview of this fall’s programming; and learn about upcoming renovations. Registration is required for this event.
  3. If you’re looking for an opportunity to learn more about creating a space for open dialogue in the classroom, the upcoming Lunch & Learn with the Constructive Dialogue Institute on Sept. 28 is a great chance to do so. Please RSVP before noon on Friday, Sept. 23, in order to receive lunch. The event is hosted by Student Affairs, The Democracy Initiative, and the Studio for Teaching & Learning Innovation (STLI).
  4. Starting this Friday, Sept. 23, W&M is holding Family Weekend. This is a special chance to show our students’ families that they are an important part of the W&M community. One way you can get involved is to open your class(es) to them. This is not required yet is a great option to get to know your students and their families.
  5. The shout-out for this week goes to our Board of Visitors. I look forward to having our new members join us, and to the leadership of the new rector, vice rector, and secretary. I also want to thank the board members whose terms ended this summer. The value our Board of Visitors provides with their counsel is incalculable. I look forward to all that we can accomplish together.

Finally, I’d like to make a clarification on an item from last week: W&M is cited in Morning Consult’s new ranking as the most trusted public university in the nation.
