Summary

It’s hard to believe we are already more than halfway through the fall semester. I’ve been grateful for the many opportunities to gather as a community, including this past Saturday’s football game where I had the pleasure of recognizing exceptional student-athletes during the Provost’s Award celebration at half-time. I also thoroughly enjoyed Dancevent at the Kimball Theatre, our Dance Program’s fall concert that featured faculty choreography performed by members of the dance company Orchesis. Orchesis is part of the Department of Theatre, Speech, and Dance, and is led by both Dance faculty and student officers.

Here are this week’s Top 5 Things to Know:

  1. I’m pleased to share the new digital home for the Computing, Data Science & Applied Science (CDS) Initiative. The site will house information on the initiative and be updated as the exploratory effort continues, recognizing that William & Mary is early in the process and will be gathering community feedback as it progresses.
  2. I’m looking forward to reviewing the applications for the Plumeri Awards, which are still open through this Tuesday, Nov. 1. Full-time faculty members who have been at W&M for five years or longer are eligible for the award. Nine awardees will be selected to each receive a $20,000 prize, and one will be selected for an Athletics Leadership Excellence award.
  3. In partnership with nine campus organizations, the Charles Center is hosting an event to promote undergraduate Summer 2023 Research & Internship opportunities on the Terrace in front of Sadler Center, 4-6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4. In addition to music by members of W&M's Appalachian Music Ensemble, there will be cookies, cider and hot cocoa. Learn more on the event page.
  4. Last week’s Tack Faculty Lecture by Professor of Classical Studies Georgia Irby, “Sea Monsters! ‘O Brave new seas that have such monsters in them,” was shared with a full room, including attendance from members of the Tack family. I was fortunate enough to introduce the outstanding lecture, and I am appreciative to all who helped make it happen. A call for nominations for the next Tack lectures will be sent to all faculty soon.
  5. This week’s shout-out goes to the University Communications and Marketing teams. They created some clever Halloween spirit on the university’s home page and Happy Harkoween digital downloads and pumpkin carving stencils. I salute their creativity and appreciate these moments of levity.

Happy Halloween!
