Summary

Our retired faculty of 2020 and 2021 are returning to campus tomorrow for an evening reception celebrating their impact and dedication to the William & Mary community. Earlier recognition was delayed due to COVID-19, but now that we are able, it will be wonderful to have everyone gather again and be recognized for so many years of dedication to the university. I am grateful for the opportunity to spend time with these colleagues, to hear from them about their illustrious careers and what this next stage has brought to bear.

Here are this week’s Top 5 Things to Know:

  1. Nominations for W&M’s 2022 James Monroe Prize in Civic Leadership are open through noon on Oct. 28. The nominated student should be “an undergraduate student who exemplifies the acceptance of just responsibility through leadership for the greater good.” The honoree receives a financial scholarship and framed citation, and their name will be added to a permanent plaque in the Sadler Center. Please consider nominating an undergraduate student you believe meets the criteria.
  2. The 7th Annual Diversity & Inclusion Symposium, “Creating an Inclusive Community; Actions Speak Louder than Words,” is scheduled for Nov. 3 at the School of Education’s Professional Development Center. Keynote speakers include Dr. Daryl G. Smith and Junior Pena, and registration is required.
  3. The Health & Wellness Center is holding a free Introduction to Mindfulness for Faculty & Staff beginning Oct. 25. This offers an opportunity to learn new skills in managing stress and anxiety to help improve one’s quality of life. Please email Becca Marcus with any questions. Spots are limited, so please act fast if you are interested.
  4. This Friday, Oct. 21, the undergraduate student organization W&M Global Innovation Challenge (WMGIC) is partnering with NATO Headquarters to host a virtual Countering Disinformation Challenge. Hundreds of undergraduate students from across the NATO Alliance and partner nations will be participating. Opening and closing ceremonies, featuring American Academy of Diplomacy's Gen. Philip Breedlove and other speakers from NATO, will be livestreamed. For more details, visit WMGIC x NATO Countering Disinformation Challenge 2022 | William & Mary.
  5. This week’s shout-out goes to the Faculty Assembly for its important role in strengthening shared governance through various activities and initiatives led and moderated by faculty senators, and for expanding the avenues of open communication across our university. I look forward to continued strong and productive partnerships with the Faculty Assembly as the representative body for William & Mary faculty.
