Coming back from productive meetings with the W&M Foundation Board of Trustees and the Washington Center Advisory Board, an amazing Faculty Show at the Muscarelle Museum by W&M studio art faculty, and a fabulous Homecoming weekend, I’m going to keep this intro short and go directly to the Top 5 Things to Know this week:
- Tomorrow, Oct. 11, from 6-8 p.m., the Lemon Project, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Center for Student Diversity and Center for Social and Racial Justice will host Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr. for a workshop, America is Changing: Are You Ready? The session will challenge the audience to examine and explore issues related to bias, privilege, equity, supremacy and belief systems. Registration is required.
- The application deadline is fast approaching for W&M’s Innovative Diversity Efforts Awards, known as IDEA Grants. Faculty, staff, students and organizations across campus are eligible to apply, and at least three projects will be funded annually. Applications are due by 5 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 14.
- The Studio for Teaching & Learning Innovation’s next offering of “STLI Quick Bites,” the bi-weekly, 30-minute Zoom sessions on innovative teaching tools and resources for the digital learning environment, is scheduled for Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. This event features the Constructive Dialogue Institute's “Perspectives” program. No RSVP is needed.
- The Building Connections & Bridging Differences initiative is launching events “to bring people together to celebrate, confer and share how we build understanding, belonging and community.” On Oct. 20 at 5:30 p.m., the first of two no-cost dinner and discussion events will offer opportunities to share your experiences as members of the W&M community. Participants will also receive a list of events occurring over the semester to participate in. Advance registration is required, and will close on Oct. 15 or when this event reaches capacity. The event location is the W&M Alumni House, 500 Richmond Road.
- This week’s shout-out goes to all who organized and staffed another successful Homecoming & Reunion Weekend at William & Mary. You made us all look good as new visitors and returning guests and former students enjoyed this sampling of faculty open houses, the President’s Discussion on democracy and the media, the winning football game, and serendipitous encounters with long-missed friends. Thank you for a fantastic fall weekend.
In closing, as the university prepares to celebrate the accomplished W&M career of Chief Operating Officer Amy Sebring this week, I am reflecting on the continued importance of a strong, effective partnership between W&M’s provost and the chief operating officer. This is a partnership that directly affects our faculty in terms of strategy and resource considerations, and as chair of the search committee, I will carry your input forward as the search process commences. Please share your suggestions regarding this search and position at provost@wm.edu.
